A few words from the Vice-Chancellor The Vice-Chancellor on behalf of the University community, welcomes the viewers of this website. Spread over a sprawling verdant, green campus of almost 400 acres, the University of Kalyani, established in 1960, began as one of the development of education in an emergent West Bengal. Having overcome several trials and tribulations, it has successfully completed a historic journey and has stepped into its Golden Jubilee year on November 01, 2009. Having started as a unitary University, it has, at present developed into an important affiliating institution of higher education currently having under its aegis – colleges of two major districts of West Bengal. Together with these colleges which conduct Graduate and Postgraduate Courses, the University also has under its jurisdiction other institutions offering management and professional courses and two Law colleges. The affiliating University has four Faculties which offer Postgraduate Courses in Science, Arts, Commerce, Education, Engineering, Technology & Management combining the traditional with the contemporary in emerging multidisciplinary areas of study and research. Apart from academic programmes, research initiatives taken up by the University have earned accolades from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which awarded the University a B+ grading in the recent past. The innovative research programmes being carried out, particularly in the Science Faculty, has earned praise of the scientific community of the country and this work has been rated as one of the best in West Bengal. Adhering to the recommendations of NAAC, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) has been established with eminent academicians to implement and monitor quality parameters in all academic spheres. With 177 Number of teaching positions, 30 Number of officers and with 1591. thousand Postgraduate students on the campus and 38 thousand of students in affiliated colleges the University is poised to usher in a new era. There are about 422 hundred non-teaching technical and other support staff to stream-line the academic and administrative structure. This University, while establishing overseas linkages and collaboration has also been able to initiate research programmes with the Institute of Mineralogy and Geochemistry, University of Karlsruhe (German) and BIORONE (a private Limited Co.) situate at Sainte-Foy-les-Lyon, France. It has also signed bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Valencia (Spain). The University is currently also a member of Global University Network (GUNI), . This statement can be substantiated with the fact that currently it has ( 27 Number ) of ongoing Major Research Projects funded by different funding agencies like UGC, DST, CSIR, ICMR, ICAR etc. : it also has conducted (06 number) of FIST Programmes funded DST, Govt. of India and ( 03 Number) UGC SAP Programmes during 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 (07 + 08) number of) faculty members have participated in International Conferences by presenting papers and acting as Chair persons. Moreover the University has undertaking several development schemes to improve its infrastructural facilities. These schemes have received the approval and support of UGC. During XI Plan period the UGC has , therefore sanctioned an amount of Rs.12.95 crores for different developmental schemes. The University has also been able to avail of fund support of about 2,56,61,638/- Crore from the Government of West Bengal against different capital construction projects. Notable amongst them are : a) Construction of the Building for the Departments of Microbiology and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. b) Construction of the Building for the Departments of Geography and Physiology. c) Construction of inside campus roads d) Vertical construction of the Central Library Building. e) Vertical construction of the Health Centre Building. f) Construction of the Building for the Department of Business Administration. Another important contribution of the University are the Extension services which have been successfully taken up by the Centre for Adult Continuing Education & Extension and the International Centre for Ecological Engineering etc. which have carried out activities towards fulfilling the needs of the surrounding rural population and making them self sufficient and Vocationally equipped. With an objective of increasing the scope and inclusiveness of education, the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning (DODL) has been established on the campus after its approval by the Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi. This offers (10 number) of Postgraduate courses and (06 number ) of PG Diploma Courses. As a part of its resolve during the Golden Jubilee Year the University has decided to tame up the following programmes : a) Construction of a Golden Jubilee Hall b) Augmentation of the natural ambience threw campus beautification. c) Erection of University – College Networking d) Establishment of Statues of Great Leaders and Pioneers in education and creation of archives on cultural heritage. e) Creation of a Sports Complex. f) Publishing a Souvenir. g) Organizing National/ International Seminars/Symposia/Workshop. h) Presentation a series of Cultural Programmes. i) Creation of an active Alumni Association. j) Making of a Documentary Film. The Mission and Vision of our University is to contribute to Society through the pursuit and Patronage of quality education learning and research in the two educationally backward districts of West Bengal and there are by promoting and ensuring excellence in Higher Education. As an integral part of this endeavor, the University also aims to disseminate knowledge and encourage learning in these two districts and thus make a significant contribution towards social and economic growth.
