Student Support and Progression

Besides creation and effective use of the infrastructure it is the overall environment of support available to the students in a University, which determines the quality of education imparted there. This may also be reflected in the progression of the students to higher levels of academic pursuits and employment.

It is desirable that the University publishes regularly a Prospectus which includes updated information on academic programmes, admission rules and procedures, fees, scholarships etc. providing the necessary initial guidelines to the new entrants.

Financial assistance and scholarships for general students and state and UGC sponsored stipends for the SC and ST students are available as per State Government rules. Over 280 University students were the beneficiaries last year. The departmental Alumni Associations award Book Grants for needy students. The University is reportedly planning to establish an Alumni Association of the University, which may provide a good forum both for, feed back on the general working of the University and for contribution to its further development.

Low fee structure, which has not been revised for the last 20 years and the provision for subsidizing food expenses for the students living in the hostels is indeed a valuable support for the students of the relatively disadvantaged region which the University is supposed to serve. However, keeping in view the high educational the University may consider raising the tuition fee progressively while making abundant provision for freeships and fee concession to protect the interest of the relatively poor section of students.
The Dean of Students' Welfare looks after the welfare of students and organizes programmes with the support of AIU.

Special provision has been made for the benefit of overseas students. This includes earmarking of 15% of the total number of seats over and above the normal intake for admission, one window service and accommodation in the hostels.

The University has made a provision for feedback from, the students on, and redressal of, complaints relating to hostel facilities, examinations and general administration. This is done through Council of Students' Welfare and Students' Executive Council. A special Council has been established to check harassment of women. It has been reported to us during our interaction with students representatives that the sense of safety and security experienced by the girl students on the campus has been appreciated. The University is also planning to establish a special Placement Cell. This would go a long way in providing an important support to the students.
The fact that a number of the alumni of this University occupied research positions in prestigious research institute such as TIFR, IISC(Bangalore), CSIR and IACS(Calcutta) is a commendable evidence of good progression.
