Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, established in 1981, conducts M.Sc. course in Biochemistry and M.Sc. course in Biophysics, i.e., the two M.Sc. courses have been running under one roof of the Department . Department has intake capacity of twenty (20) students for M.Sc. course in Biochemistry and twenty (20) students for M.Sc course in Biophysics. The Departmental Faculties have been involved in teaching and research in Basic Biochemistry, Basic Biophysics, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology,  Cellular Signaling, Biochemistry of host parasite interactions, X-ray crystallography, Molecular Modeling, Bio-informatics etc. Faculty members of the department are also involved in strengthening other related Departments of the University by taking postgraduate classes and helping their research activities. Presently, forty three (43) students have been carrying out their research works under supervision of the Departmental faculties. The Department has already gained attention from leading scientists and academicians at the National and Internation levels. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has identified this Department under the FIST (Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities and other Higher Educational Institutions) Program. UGC has also identified this Department under SAP.

Focus and Thrust areas of  the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

The Department offers two degrees: One MSc in Biochemistry and MSc in Biophysics. The focus of teaching and research of the Department is, therefore, associated with different fields of Biochemistry and Biophysics.
The focus of teaching in Biochemistry and Biophysics underlies mainly with the understanding the nature and characteristics of different biomolecules and their structural, metabolic, molecular and genetic aspects in microbial, plant and animal systems.
The following are the thrust areas of research of the faculty members of the Department: 

1. Understanding biochemical mechanisms in regulating pulmonary vascular tone under oxidant and calcium signaling phenomena by the vasoactive mediators such as thromboxane A2, endothelin-1, angiotensin II, leukotriene D4 etc.
2.  Effect of chronic oxidative stress in mammalian cells.   
3. Structural and biophysical studies on the mechasnism of induction of heat-shock proteins in E.Coli.
4. Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the sustained metal tolerance of fungi.
5. Protein-ligand interaction by x-ray crystallographic studies and modeling studies of membrane systems.                                                                                                                             
6. Studies on the binding patters of  different nanoparticles and development of their biosensors.
7. Role of different proteases in the pathogenesis of visceral leishmaniasis and the efficacy of different natural products as therapeutic measure to combat leishmaniasis.
8. Studies on the effects of microwave radiation on cultured mammalian cells.
9. Studies on the biological activities of some synthetic and natural products to characterize their anti-cancer activities.
10. Studies on bystander effect of UV-radiation.
11. In-silico characterization of formin binding protein 4 and their interactions with formins.
12. Study on the role of actin binding proteins in molecular dystrophies from structural view point.
13. Supramolecular chemistry: Study of self-association of peptide based molecules: elucidation of molecular assembly, mechanism, designing of nano dimension materials, novel biomaterials as well as biological applications of self-assembled system.
