Department of Sociology

The department of Sociology, a pioneering endeavour in the eastern region of India, started its journey as early as in 1964, with a subsidiary course at graduate level. A couple of years later, a post-graduate course in Sociology was introduced and the graduate (honours) course followed soon.The department developed, since its inception, strong links with academic institutions in India and abroad. Regularity in participation by the faculty members in national and international fora, for exchange of views and ideas.The department, in drawing up the framework of the curriculum, has had remained sufficiently sensitive to the needs and interests of the industrial and semi-rural setting, in which it is located. The choice of the thrust areas is actually a function of such concern. Some of the thrust areas are : Rural Development with special emphasis on poverty alleviation, Gender Studies and Industrial Relations.
