Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

     
 

The Semester based two-years M.Sc Programme in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology was first initiated in the academic session 2003-04 with a batch of 10 students. The self-finance course offered by the Department will suit any student having honours in the stipulated subject and has a good research skill, innovative ideas with self-confidence and ability to work long hours.The program not only offers student’s opportunities to pursue study in several relevant focus areas including the theoretical & practical aspects of biotechnology, but also the business of biotechnology, marketing, commercialization as well as the legal & ethical aspects of biotechnological applications. The course is emphasized on lectures, seminars and hands-on training. The course & curriculum has been designed and continually updated in consultation with the academicians, research scientists, and industry people. The present course curriculum has been thoroughly revised from the academic year 2005.

Departmental Profile

The Department has shown its mark in the teaching of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. All the students passing out from the Department have either been engaged in the research, educational institute or biotech industries. The Department is able to provide the infrastructure for conducting research work in the advanced field of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Eight students have already enrolled their name as PhD Students.

M.Sc. in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology - a two-year (4 Semesters) Post Graduate degree.

 
 


Intake Capacity
22 students .

Twenty-two (22) students (at least one from each of Honours subject) and the will take admission from candidates having Honours in Botany/ Chemistry/ Physiology/Zoology/Microbiology/Molecular Biology and or Biotechnology/ Biochemistry/Genetics.

Reservation of seats for SC/ST/PC candidates will be followed as per University Rule.

Eligibility Crieteria and Fees :

The applicants who will be eligible to sit for the admission test are the Honours Graduates (10+2+3 systems) with at least 50% marks in any one of the following Honours Subjects: Botany / Chemistry/ Physiology / Microbiology / Molecular Biology and or Biotechnology / Zoology / Biochemistry / Genetics.  Honours graduate other than Chemistry / Biochemistry shall have chemistry as a general subject (at least 300 marks including theoretical and practical papers) in degree course. The applicants with Honours in Chemistry subject should have Biology at their Higher Secondary level.

The applicant who has appeared in the final examination of B. Sc (Honours) is eligible to sit for admission test but he/she has to submit their final mark sheet

Tution Fees 15,000/-(Semester)

Course Duration :

Two academic years. The Course shall comprise of 4 Semesters (each semester of 6 (six) months duration). The academic calendar will be provided at the time of admission.
1st Semester          : July, 2010 – December, 2010
2nd Semester       : January, 2011 – June, 2011
3rd Semester         : July, 2011 – December, 2011
4th Semester        : January, 2012 – June, 2012

Admission Procedure

Admission Test :

All the eligible applicants will have to appear at an admission test. The medium of instruction and examination shall be in English. Admission test will be of 75 minutes with 100 full marks. The questions will be of objective type (Chemistry part – B.Sc. general level; Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Physiology, Biochemistry & Biophysics and Microbiology part – Higher Secondary or equivalent level.

Admission :

Generally one student from each of the (8) eight disciplines will be admitted according to the separate merit list prepared for each subject  from the weighted average of the marks  (in %) obtained in the Honours subject at the B. Sc. examination (30 %), in the admission test (60 %) and in H.S or its equivalent examination (10%). The remaining 14 (fourteen) seats and vacant seat (if student from the above disciplines are not available)  will be filled in accordance to the order of merit in the composite merit list prepared taking all the candidates of all the subjects together.

Library and Computer Facilities :

The University Central library is well developed. The Department has its own departmental library. The library has been enriched with current text and reference books. The Students are provided with easier borrowing and reading facilities. In keeping with the course contents, the students will be provided with adequate number of computer terminals in the Department, Department of Computer Science, and Central Computer and Network facilities of the University

Summer Training  and Industrial Training:

Students may undertake a supervised research project in distinguished National Research Institute to update their knowledge on the recent trends of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology. In the final year the student will get the opportunity to interact with the biotech industry & have to prepare a project report based on their experiences. The Departmental student’s seminar, lecture, group discussion, class test etc. in the field of fundamental, advanced or specialized areas equip the students for build up their carrier.

Laboratory :

The laboratory of the department is equipped with modern instruments, which are conducive for practical classes and research activities in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology. The practical classes offered in the Department encompasses the field of Genetics, Microbiology, Biochemistry & Physico chemical Techniques, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Recombinant DNA technology and Genetic engineering, Microbial Biotechnology and Fermentation Technology, Agricultural Biotechnology and Plant Products, Environmental Biotechnology, Immunology & Health Care Technology, Animal Biotechnology etc. The students also get the support from the laboratories of interacting Departments and Institutes.
